The Department of Visual Communication (BVC), established in 2015, offers the UG Programme ‘BA Visual Communication’. Started under the leadership of Mr. Melbin Suresh (HOD), in six years’ time, the BVC Department has achieved robust growth at different levels. Now the department of BVC is headed by Mr. Adarsh Augustine and has three full time faculty members and around five Guest faculty from the field of Design industry.
Among the milestones of the Department are the establishment of the extension activities such as ‘Chetana Design Hub’ (2018) and the `Chetana Fest Inter collegiate Show’ (2019). The Hub so far has organized two major Wall Painting workshops, namely the `Painted Walls’ workshop (2018) and the `Speaking Wall’ workshop’ (2020) in the campus and also installation projects outside like the `Save Water’ campaign project in Kunnamkulam town on the World Water Day, in collaboration with the local government bodies. The annual ‘History of Art exhibition’ on campus and ‘Field Trips’ to Art Gallery, Trivandrum and Kochi-Muziris Biennale come in the line of the ‘out of the box’ approaches to implement the curriculum.
Such art initiatives of the Department of BVC have contributed significantly to re-imagine and remould the course curriculum, incorporating intense student participation and taking learning in classrooms to a creatively different level. Instead of the conventional ‘gadget-oriented’ mode of teaching and learning visual communication, the Department has always been keen on connecting the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of the design process, also linking the classroom to the outside Design industry. The philosophy of ‘enjoyable and responsible learning’ mooted by the BVC Department has promoted ownership among the student community and this prompts them to convert even the quotidian moments of the campus life into expressions of creative art.
